Photos of the 11th World Congress on Art Deco, 14 and 21 August 2011 Dear friends,
It is with great pride that I announce that, representing Brazil Art Déco Institute, I am the winner of the 2011 State of Rio de Janeiro Culture Award, in the Material Heritage category, announced yesterday in an event at the Municipal Theater. More than a personal victory, it indicates the good moment that Art Déco enjoys in Rio nowadays. The "Quitandinha", former Hotel-Casino, jewel of the Art Déco baroque, decorated by North American Dorothy Draper(her largest project!) in the 40's is being accurately restored by SESC.
The building was part of the TV serie "Dalva e Herivelto" and will shine again during the lecture by the Art Déco expert Marcio Roiter. It will be during the summer course organised by " Casa do Saber" and SESC.
Talking about the Quitandinha, it will be in this almost untouched moment one of the "World Congress on Art Déco"® events, in July 2011.

Márcio Roiter, founder and president of Instituto Art Déco Brasil travels on May to Montreal and Toronto, representing Brazil at the 10th World Congress on Art Déco. It is the third time Marcio speaks about Rio Art Déco in a world congress. He will present an invitation tho the participants for the 11th World Congress, that as you know, will be in Rio, on July 2011. What only few people know is that we have in Rio one of the most special Art Déco buildings in the world: the original hangar for dirigibles like the Hindenburg and Zeppelin, from the Thirties, in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz. Inaugurated by President Vargas in 1936, is the only one sitll existing in the world. Will be there, probably one of the gatherings of the congress.
"Modern Rio"
It was in this same 1936 that the architect Le Corbusier arrived in Rio, by the Zeppelin, in his second visit to Rio. Here he had several meetings wiht the young architects Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa, Carlos Leão among others, and together they designed the building of hte Health and Education Ministery, considered the beginning of Modern Architecture in the continent.
"Rio Retrô"
And the gossiping i have to tell you: in his first visit, in 1929 Le Corbusier had a torrid romance with Joséphine Baker. They left Buenos Aires in the same oceanliner, and amused themselves a lot in Rio. An affair that few people know. Le Corbusier adored the "favelas" (slums), and when he projected his beach house in the south of France, "le Cabanon" in Roquebrune Cap Saint Martin, he imitated the kond of simple constructions, with large windows to the views, structured on palafittes. This is history, my friends...
